It’s been quite a year for David Cook. This reality show alum went from ‘American Idol’ to record-breaking rock star almost over night. After winning the seventh season of the show, Cook debuted eleven songs on the Billboard Top 100 in one week, shattering the previous record set by Miley Cyrus in 2006.
As if his platinum CD ‘Exclusive’ wasn’t a big enough hit, Chris Brown released a deluxe version of it called ‘The Forever Edition’ in 2008. The re-release featured a DVD of his concert tour and four new tracks, including the hit ‘Forever.’ Chris Breezy also collaborated on other hits such as ‘No Air’ with Jordin Sparks.
Mariah’s star shined brighter than ever in 2008. Her single ‘Touch My Body’ became her 18th number one song, making her runner-up for the most number ones ever. In April, she shocked everyone by marrying Nick Cannon after dating for only a few weeks. She also proved her acting chops with a cameo in the film ‘You Don’t Mess with the Zohan.’
This year was full of ups and downs for the self-described “best rapper alive.” In January, he was arrested for drug possession and a slew of other charges. His record ‘Tha Carter III,’ released in June, went double-platinum and his single ‘Lollipop’ topped the charts. On October 22, Lil Wayne welcomed his son into the world.
Riding the success of her last album, Rihanna re-issued ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’ in June with two new hit singles. ‘Take a Bow’ became an international success and ‘Disturbia’ hit the top of the charts. In September, Rihanna teamed up with other singers to record ‘Just Stand Up!’ for the anti-cancer campaign Stand Up to Cancer.
Madonna turned 50 this year, but she has not slowed down one bit since her days as a Material Girl. Madge kicked off her international ‘Sticky & Sweet’ tour to promote ‘Hard Candy,’ her eleventh studio album. She was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In October, she filed for divorce from hubby Guy Ritchie amidst rumors of an affair with New York Yankee A-Rod.
They tried to make her go to rehab, and she did go, go, go … at least briefly. Despite her drug problems and overall poor health, Winehouse still had a successful year. Early in 2008, her album ‘Back to Black’ sold 3.67 million copies and became a worldwide bestseller. She also won five Grammys, although she was unable to accept the awards in person after the US government denied her a visa due to her use of narcotics.
Early this year, Beyonce took on the gaming world when she launched her own mobile game ‘Beyonce Fashion Diva.’ In April, she married long-time boyfriend Jay-Z in a private ceremony. She wrapped up a busy year by releasing her third solo album, ‘I Am…Sasha Fierce,’ which produced two hit songs, ‘If I Were a Boy’ and ‘Single Ladies,’ before the album was even in stores.
Her career is taking off but she is still trying to live the life of a normal 18 year old. The Grammy nominee searched for a prom date on the MTV show ‘Once Upon a Prom.’ In November, she released her latest album, ‘Fearless.’
